911 Emergency Response

How UVES Responds to Calls:

UVES is dispatched by Broome County Emergency Services. All EMS (Emergency Medical Services) calls are screened via EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) criteria, assigning each call a priority, Alpha through Echo. An Alpha response is also referred to as a non-emergency response (no lights and siren) meaning no life-threatening signs or symptoms were related to the dispatcher by the caller. At the other end of the spectrum, the Echo priority call, indicates the patient is critical. With any call, Bravo through Echo, the only thing that changes is the point at which ALS (Advanced Life Support) is dispatched to the call. This does not typically impact the district UVES serves because we have at least one ambulance staffed ALS 24/7!

The national standard for ALS response times, which would be calls of Charlie priority and up, is eight minutes. Within the Town of Union, on average (accumulated over a period of several months) our response time for all calls - Bravo through Echo - was just over seven minutes!

There are a number of Fire Departments - Volunteer and Paid - whom act as First Responders for medical emergencies. The purpose for this is to get trained personnel at the side of the patient as rapidly as possible.

So if you call 911 for a medical emergency, and a fire engine shows up, that's why!
