Member Training

Lives depend on you. So our trainers want you to have every bit of knowledge you can use.

The following is the minimum training required to provide patient care:

  • All UVES personnel must maintain an AHA CPR for Healthcare Providers Card.
  • Personnel who provide treatment and transport must be at least a NYS EMT-D (Emergency Medical Technician - Defibrillator) and have completed an in-house training program before receiving "Crew Chief" status.  We strive to staff each ambulance with an AEMT-CC (Critical Care Technician) or AEMT-P. (Paramedic)
  • Each medic is trained and must be able to perform various procedures including IVs, medication administration, endotracheal intubation and EKG monitoring and interpretation, including 12-lead EKGs

Medics operating in Broome County do so under strict medical oversight via Susquehanna Regional Medical Emergency Services, but receive great autonomy.

Treatment modalities are outlined in our regional protocols and categorized as either Standing Orders or Med Control Options. Standing Orders are treatment plans medics follow without first receiving specific instruction. Med Control Options are orders the medic needs to specifically request before starting.
